Preparing Food Plots For A Trophy Whitetail Hunting Trip
Anyone who has ever been on a trophy whitetail hunting trip would say that for the best results, you want to find an area of private land far away from houses, roads and other noise and activity. This particular species of deer is one of the more challenging to hunt. Trophy whitetail deer are smart. Over the years, the deer have learned what to look for so finding them can be difficult which is part of the excitement.
If you want to go on a trophy whitetail hunting trip, an excellent method is by using food plots which is a special area of land with crops that only this type of deer like to eat. Of course, even by choosing the right food plots is no guarantee on a successful kill but it would at least allow you to get into the areas where this species of deer is found.
Along with looking for food plots, it is imperative that you understand how to hunt deer. For example by have the right color and type of camouflaged clothing and that you use a good bow or rifle. Remember, because whitetail deer are so aware of their surrounding and have learned how to spot people, clothing is one of the most important necessities. For this, you must make sure you have proper coverage literally from head to toe. That way, you can blend into the landscape much easier without being spotted.
Now, in finding food plots for whitetail deer hunting trips you should start by looking around bodies of water. In addition, deer will find places to rest during the day before they hunt and scavenge for food so if you can identify these places, you would increase your chance of a successful kill as well. Although you may not find the most whitetail in areas where other species like to hang out, you could certainly consider this option too.
The goal is to find not just one, but multiple food plots if you can. Now, if you have land and you love trophy whitetail deer hunting, you could always create your own food plots. In this case, be sure to spread the plots out and make sure you choose food that only this particular type of deer likes to eat. It would not be long before whitetail deer find the plots you have grown and soon, more and more will enter the area for you to hunt.
A few things to remember when planting food plots is that before you start working the land, you would need to remove any brush, shrubs, dried vegetation, etc. Now, if you live in a part of the country where your land commonly becomes overgrown with weeds, then you would need to use an organic or natural herbicide to eliminate them. Make sure not to use anything with chemicals in that it could harm the deer.
The easiest way to prepare food plots for trophy whitetail deer hunting is to use a disc. Be sure the sod is united in the appropriate way, which would be done by going over the plot crossing several times. When that is done, you would then plow the land. Once you have finished plowing the food plots, you need to provide furrows and sod to dry for at least one week, at which time only the dried sod would be cut. From there, the plots would be leveled.
When the plots are completely prepared, now comes time to plant food so you can have a successful trophy whitetail deer hunting trip. If the plots are small, the seeding could be done by hand but if the land is large or you have numerous food plots, a spreader is by far the easiest method. Keep in mind, for whitetail deer, seeding should be done in the spring or winter. You would then allow the seeds to grow and when food is ready to eat, whitetail deer would come.
