Whitetail Bow Hunting Overview

Millions of people deer hunt using shotguns, rifles and muzzleloaders but for others, the weapon of choice is a bow and arrowAlthough whitetail bow hunting has always been an option and a popular choice, over the past several years its level of popularity has increased.

While a number of reasons exist for this increase of people who use bows to hunt deer, the number one reason is that hunters believe it creates a more level playing ground.  In other words, for hunters who enjoy the actual hunt rather than simply killing a whitetail deer, bow hunting is more challenging and therefore, it gives the deer more opportunity to get away.

Whitetail bow hunting is similar to firearms hunting in that the appropriate license is needed, hunters must hunt during bow season and hunters need to understand hunting regulations for the state in which they plan to hunt.  In addition, it is just as important to learn safety rules for whitetail bow hunting.  Many people can be and are injured or even killed with bow hunting as with firearms hunting.

Whitetail bow hunting is something that could be done by a youth or adult, as long as the individual has the proper knowledge and equipment.  Bows and arrows are made in a wide variety of styles and sizes for this very reason.  For anyone interested in bow hunting, the first step would be to get hold of current regulations.  Spending time to review this information is crucial, increasing the hunter’s success in the hunt but also his or her safety.

For whitetail bow hunting, hunters must be responsible, which means along with following safety guidelines for the equipment used and complying with all regulations and laws.  In addition to this, anyone using a bow and arrow to hunt deer should be aware of regulations for hunting on both private and public land.  For instance, if a person or group of whitetail bow hunters wanted to hunt on a stranger’s private property, permission would need to be obtained or a leasing outfitter could be used to create an official lease between the hunter and property owner.

For someone who has never been whitetail bow hunting, bow safety classes are offered in each state. These classroom courses teach people about the different features and functions of the bow used and most importantly, safety measures.  To find classes, the National Bow Hunter Education Foundation or NBEF can be researched online.

Another helpful resource for whitetail bow hunting is through the state’s fish and game department.  This organization is excellent and the government officials working there can answer questions or provide any guidance needed.

Keep in mind that in some states, special whitetail bow hunting seasons are established.  In addition, certain states regulate the type of bow, as well as the size and weight of the arrows used.  For this reason, prior to purchasing any equipment, it would be important to know what is and is not allowed for the state where the deer would be hunted.
